Course overview
Our Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) course is designed for those working in the world's most challenging environments, whether you work for a media outlet, NGO, charity or the hostile security sector - our dynamic, fully loaded course will give you the knowledge to survive against the odds. The five-day course offers a mix of advanced theoretical and practical sessions of simulated exercises. The training is gradual: starting with theory, it then moves to guided exercises to make participants comfortable with each concept. The intensity levels increase each day so that participants can practice their new skills under more realistic conditions.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Demonstrate advanced First Aid and life support skills in challenging field environments.
Apply personal safety and security measures effectively in hostile environments.
Employ a safety and security mindset to assess risks and make informed decisions.
Operate various communications equipment for effective communication in high-risk situations.
Execute strategies for dealing with capture and captivity scenarios.
Demonstrate appropriate behavior under fire and during threatening situations.
Identify and assess threats in the field, including conflict management techniques.
Utilize basic negotiation skills when faced with challenging situations.
Construct individual situational awareness in high-risk environments.
Identify and handle unexploded ordnance (UXO) and improvised explosive devices (IED) threats.
Course content
Module I – Advanced Medical training
First Aid & life support in difficult field environments.
Module II – Personnel deployed to hostile environments
Awareness of threats, associated risks and personal security.
Risk management process.
Travel security, security procedures for vehicle travel, accommodation security
Management of threats related to gatherings, protests, demonstrations, riots and civil unrest.
Conflict management.
Weapons, mines, improvised explosive devices (IED’s)
Kidnapping, hostage taking and hostage survival.
Module III- Situational training exercise
Hostage survival.
Team under attack.
Module IV – Orientation and communications.
Map reading and GPS Navigation.
Means of communications and communication procedures.
Module V - Field training exercise.
Training Methodology
Participants receive a mix of presentations and lectures plus simulated exercises to help give them a better understanding of the security principles involved with staying safe in hostile environments.
