mselect is looking to hire a Wellsite Geologist for an international energy client in Basrah, Iraq. Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in operations geology, with at least 3 years as wellsite geologist in onshore/offshore drilling experience, including horizontal wells. Fluency in English and Arabic is a must.

JOB DIMENSIONS
Key contributor to deliver safe operations through efficient real-time identification of any drilling hazards. Ensuring a proper follow up and interpretation of the geological acquisitions onsite and a close supervision of service companies linked to Geoscience (Mud Logging, M-LWD, E-Logging and Coring).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise Geological Operations at rig site in close collaboration with Subsurface team in town and operational people on rig site This includes (but not limited to) well operations & data acquisition programme follow-up, coordination/supervision of contracted services, evaluation of crews and equipment performances at rig site, real-time data QA/QC, basic real-time interpretation, and post well analysis. Key contributor in delivering the drilling operations in time, on budget, and in safe conditions:
HSE:
  • Ensure the application and respect of client’s HSE rules and procedures for geological operations at rig site, being pro-active on this matter by participating actively in the “stop card” system and by reporting all incidents, accidents, and/or potentially dangerous situations observed; for that, he/she shall:
  • Have all HSE and medical certificates updated and complete all HSE trainings required
  • Complete the 12 Golden Rules training (obtain the certificates) and participate regularly in the GR campaigns
  • Contribute actively to the development of the safety culture within the operational team
  • Key contributor for the proper respect of all safety procedures and orders applicable to all service companies’ personnel under his/her supervision
  • Contribute to the safety of operations through efficient implementation, integration, and interpretation of real time detection techniques
  • Collect and share all safety alerts, incidents, and/or accidents reports issued by the crews and service companies
  • Conduct, with the help of the HSE coordinator, HSE & Technical annual visits/audits on service companies’ bases (onshore)
Operational Follow Up:
  • Ensure application of wellsite standard procedures and standing orders for data acquisition and safety (in coordination with the drilling team)
  • Make a complete and relevant reporting from rig site operations to local office
  • Ensure an efficient communication between the mud logging/wireline personnel and the drilling crews
  • Participate actively in the identification and evaluation of drilling hazards (losses, gains, overpressure, swelling clays, etc), through the interpretation (real-time) of all available data (mudlogging, LWD, MWD, etc)
  • Ensure all geological surveillance tasks, from show and cutting descriptions to drawing up the final composite logs and final well reports, always applying company standards
  • In agreement with management, and close collaboration with other entities concerned, take the decision to define a coring point, intermediate logging and drilling sections TD for casing points, etc
  • Good knowledge in real-time mudlogging follow up (mainly GWD gas data and drilling parameters) and M-LWD data QA/QC, primary validation and interpretation, for well trajectory follow-up, geosteering, reservoir entry/exit detection and drilling phase/well TD decision purposes
  • Attend on site daily/weekly meetings During these meetings and at any time during operations, WSG should point out and discuss with the drilling supervisor any geosciences information which can help drilling operation efficiency and safety
  • Supervise contractor’s performance for all the services associated to geological operations at rig site (mudlogging, LWD, wireline logging and coring) This supervision shall include the check of quality and reliability of equipment, spare parts, consumables and the crew performance
  • Work closely with other supervisors at rig site, to build a cohesive and efficient team
  • Participate actively to pre-job meetings before each drilling section, especially before specific operations such as coring, wireline logging, well tests, etc
  • Participate into the elaborations, QA/QC and dispatching of all technical reports, related to the use of a new technology (REX), CTA or when uncommon environmental or operational conditions are encountered
  • Prepare the End of Well Report within the given time and ensure its distribution to all entities and partners
  • Ensure dispatching from rig to base of any rock and/or fluid samples recovered during the well
  • Actively participate for training of any new Well Site Geologists (in training and Junior)

CONTEXT AND ENVIRONMENT
  • Supervision of geological operations at rig site (availability onsite 24/7)
  • Onsite follow-up and reporting for Exploration, Appraisal and/or Development wells, deviated and horizontal wells, including HP/HT wells with narrow drilling window
  • Significant impact on well safety and overall costs
  • Working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural context

ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Main contributor to safety during drilling operations, through efficient implementation, integration, and interpretation of real time detection techniques
  • Responsible for the reliability and accuracy of the onsite data acquired
  • Be involved in the performance’s evaluation of services companies, through a precise reporting of HSE behaviour, operational follow up, timing, failures, and NPT
  • Ensure continuous supervision of service companies and perform regular Service Quality Meetings on Mud Logging, M-LWD and E-Logging
  • Ensure the support of young WSG and local staff so that they can improve their technical and soft skills

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology or Earth sciences
  • Certification in Subsurface Operations Geology is an added advantage; otherwise, it will be required during execution of the role.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in operations geology, with at least 3 years as wellsite geologist; in Onshore/Offshore drilling experience, including horizontal wells.
  • Fast adaptability, ability to co-ordinate multicultural and multi-language contractor teams.
  • Good communication skills, willingness to learn and share, awareness, and management of risks.
  • Fluent in English and Arabic.
